Skyler Has High Fever (continued)

Dearest Little Skyler,

You continued to have a high fever on Thursday, 15th March 2007, Little One. You were okay for a while in the morning and we thought you would be fine already but in the afternoon, after a short nap, your temperature shot up to 39+°C again. Thus, we had no choice but to bring you to see the doctor again. Balloon Uncle was not around then, his partner, Dr Chong was in attendance.

Dr C did the usual checks on your temperature and checked your breathing before he came to the same conclusion as Balloon Uncle, that you probably had a viral fever. The only thing we could do was to bring your temperature down and allow the fever to run its course. He supervised Mama in inserting a suppository into you and issued us two more to use in case your temperature went up again.

We went out for a while (see blog for 15th March 2007) before we brought you home again for the night.

You were totally well from the time we inserted the suppository until Friday 2 am you’re your temperature spiked once more. You cried so piteously that you woke Papa up who then woke Mama up so that we could insert another suppository as your temperature had shot up past 39°C again. After that, you were sleepy once more so you went back to bed and so did we.

You were quite ok for the rest of the morning so we took you out (see blog for 16th March 2007). You were still okay when we came back and put you to bed as you were quite tired. However, after your nap, your temperature spiked yet again so we went to see Balloon Uncle.

Balloon Uncle was slightly worried about your fever by then. Though he was quite sure that it was a viral fever, he suggested that we take you to a hospital to make sure that it was not something else. He wrote a letter highlighting your situation and gave it to us to pass it the doctor at the hospital.

As we were not sure what the result would be, we prepared for a hospital stay over by packing extra clothing and such. Then we set off for KKH where you were born.

At KKH, the nurses inserted another suppository as your temperature was so high. They took some of your blood for a test. They had to do it twice because the blood from the first extraction had clotted before they could do anything. They also wanted to collect your urine but we totally failed as the urine bag that they supplied kept on coming loose. We waited a long time to see if we could collect some urine but to no avail.

Finally, the doctor called us in and her evaluation was that you had viral fever based on your blood test. The findings also indicated that you could possibly have thalassaemia minor. We would have to bring you for another blood test this coming Monday to test for this.

We then took you home to rest.

Your temperature remained normal for the rest of the night and even into Saturday morning. However, you had developed a rash the night before and the rash got worse by morning. The main thing for us was that your temperature remained normal and we rejoiced and thanked God for that! Fever is never a good thing over a long period is it can cause so much damage to the head, Little One, especially for someone your age.

You were still quite sleepy and you went back to bed quite often the whole morning.

We decided to not go for our church’s young families and young adults gathering at the Botanic Gardens in the evening as you still had your rash and we were afraid that you might pass it to the other children. We also did not go for Tua-Pek’s families farewell dinner (they are leaving for their Cambodia stint tomorrow) as we did not want any complications arising from your passing on the virus to your che-che and kor-kors.

We found out from Aunty Patsy and Uncle Han Chong what your illness is called – Roseola Infantum. Your symptoms were exactly as they described the illness to be – high temperatures between 38.5°C and 41.5°C for 3 to 5 days before it drops to the normal temperature and a rash will appear that would last between hours and a few days. Mama and Papa came home and checked up on it and were totally comforted that in almost all cases, there were no complications arising from this viral fever. Thank God!!!

Now, we just have to wait for the rash to subside.

We love you, Darling.

Mama and Papa
