Back to the Polyclinic

Dearest Little Skyler,

We had to bring you for a follow up blood test today, Little One. It was ordered by the doctor at the hospital to ensure that your blood count was normal and that the reading that day at the hospital was due to your viral fever.

Papa rushed back from work so that we could get to the Polyclinic slightly earlier. Papa had learnt a lesson from last year when we had to bring you there for your jaundice checks. The clinic closed very early and the laboratory that did the blood test for some reason stopped accepting registrations one hour before the polyclinic itself closed. Thus, last year, we had to get you to the lab by 3.30 pm or they would not conduct the test for you!

When we got there, all the memories of last year came flooding back – the slowness of every step in the long drawn out process of seeing a doctor in a polyclinic. We took a long time to register as there were so many people waiting their turn. We had to wait for forty people to register before we could do so. After that we had to wait for some time before the doctor was ready to see us. It was only after the doctor had seen us that we could bring you to the lab for your blood test.

At the laboratory, it was yet another frustration. Mama tried to put your forms into a tray and she got reprimanded for putting your blood test request form in the X-Ray tray. So Mama asked what we were supposed to do and the lady said that we were to wait for our turn to be called. After waiting for a long time, Papa went into the blood testing room to ask what the procedure was and another lady said that we were supposed to wait for our number to flash on the screen before we could register. Thus, we waited some more. The number on the screen did not change at all for the longest time so Mama once again asked the lady behind the counter what the procedure was and she said that we were supposed to wait for our number to flash but since you were a baby, they would process us first! This was so frustrating for us – you were a baby since you got there! They simply did not bother to check and just made us wait for nothing!

Anyway, you finally had your blood test done and the results showed that your blood count had returned to the normal range! Yay! The virus is finally gone! And there’s nothing wrong with your blood except that the signs of your having thalassaemia minor are still there. We will probably have to bring you back to KKH to confirm this, Little One. In the meantime, we thank God that you’re well again.

We love you, Little One!

Mama and Papa
