Gymboree

Dearest Little Skyler,

Mama found an advertisement placed by the Gymboree that offered a free trial of their premises and a class for kids. We decided to try it out as Mama had heard quite a bit about what they did.

We managed to get an appointment for you this morning at the branch at Harbour Front Center. We had to rush down there as it was right at the southern tip of mainland Singapore and we’re living in the north! We barely made it in time for the start of the lesson.

The place was filled with children and toddler gym equipment. Everything was padded in case you fell. It was all very colourful and the equipment all looked quite safe. There was also some space for you to walk around. It was all quite nice.

The class consisted of some activities that were supposed to develop your balance and strength. The person in charge encouraged all the parents to guide their children through the activities but most of the children – including you – did not follow instructions at all and ended up doing their own things. It was quite funny.

You had the opportunity to play around with most of the ‘exercise’ equipment and you seemed to have enjoyed yourself. We’re not sure if we’ll bring you there again but it’s something that we can consider. :D

In the evening, Papa brought you to meet up with Grandma. We went over to Tampines Mall for dinner. You were very well behaved there, Little Girl. Papa even managed to finish his dinner while it was still warm! :D

We then dropped by Tuapek’s place so that we could pick up the baby car seat that he had left behind for us. We’re not sure if we’ll use it for you but since it’s available, we’ll hold on to it until we know for sure. :P

We love you, Little One!

Ambassador of Singapore

Dearest Little Skyler,

You’re really doing your part in being an ambassador of Singapore, Little One. Mama brought you out on the MRT this week and on two occasions, you waved at tourists who were traveling in the same cabin as you both.

The first tourist was from Italy. He responded to your waving by video recording you, Darling. Hahaha! You’re now part of someone’s home video collection and his memory of Singapore! :D

Today, you waved at a British couple on the train. They then started talking to Mama and apparently the man was totally surprised that you were a girl! For some reason he thought that you were a boy even though his lady companion had told him that you were a girl! :D It is so strange to both Mama and Papa that people still think that you’re a boy at this stage of your life – your hair is fairly long for a boy already and we so totally dress you up like a girl, especially with your bright pink shoes! :D Oh well…

Mama brought you down to town today and you kept on walking into stores and getting carried by the workers in them! You’re really so sociable, Little One! You’ll let anyone carry you when you’re in the mood and that is more often than not! You’ve allowed strangers in a queue with Papa carry you, you’ve allowed NTUC Fairprice cashiers carry you and you’ve allowed sales assistants carry you! Who’ve you not allowed to carry you?

It’s quite worrying for Mama and Papa, Little One, that you’re so sociable. What if someone took you away and you just allowed him / her? But at the same time, we’re very glad that you’re so sociable and secure with us and yourself. :D Sigh… the confusion of parenthood!

Mama Drove Solo

Dearest Baby Girl,

Today was the first time Mama drove without Papa in the car since she passed her driving test!

Mama was bringing you to visit Aunty Rachel again today but it was a fairly daunting trip as Aunty’s place was quite a distance for Mama to carry you there from the MRT Station. So, Mama took the car today to bring you all there in relative comfort.

It was quite an expedition and experience for Mama as it was even more challenging since Mama had hardly ever traveled around the area that Aunty Rachel stays in. And then, you both had to drive through a heavy downpour what made visibility very poor! Mama was so brave! Both of you made it to Aunty Rachel’s safely! Yay! Mama had done it! Mama had memorized the whole map to get there and then the route to take to get to Papa’s school! Mama’s so good at this!

Papa’s so proud of Mama!

Papa’s Birthday

Dearest Skyler,

Today was Papa’s birthday!

As Papa had to work the whole day ending with his lesson at night, we invited Aunty Candy to come visit and play with you. You had so much fun with Aunty Candy the whole day.

Aunty Candy had to leave so Mama brought you over to the Point to visit the library and to shop a bit to see if you all could find something for Papa’s birthday. You ended up getting Papa a slice of cake but couldn’t decide between two possible presents. :D Mama and you also got me a helium filled balloon with the Tweety character on it. It's so cute! Thank you, Darling and Mama! :D

After a very long day, Papa finally reunited with you both at the Point after which we all came home. We immediately prepared Papa’s slice of cake for the traditional birthday song and photograph taking! ;) Soon after that, we had to put you to bed as it was really late and you were so so sleepy. :D

Papa wants to thank both of you for making what little he could celebrate of his birthday so special because both of you were around. :D

Papa loves Mama and Baby Girl!

Skyler Visits Kor-Kor Isaac & Papa's Birthday 2

Dearest Little One,

Mama brought you to Aunty Rachel’s place for you to play with Kor-Kor Isaac, Little One. And you ate one relatively big bowl of porridge! Wow! That’s the most food we’ve ever seen you eat!

You completely surprised Mama once when you walked over to Kor-Kor Isaac’s bed, sat on it, put your head on the pillow and started sucking your thumb to soothe yourself to sleep! Hmmm… will you do that at home if we gave you access to your own mattress?

Papa went to pick you both up after work and brought you all back home. As your legs have grown too long to be comfortable in your car seat when facing the back, Papa and Mama have decided to fix the seat to face the front from now on so that your legs have space to hang. We had been waiting for you to be 9 kg before we did this as this is the recommended weight for babies to be before sitting facing the front but we cannot wait any longer as your legs are simply too long! :D We pray that you will be safe.

We went to get dinner and buy a birthday cake for Papa as we were celebrating Papa’s birthday with Mama’s family this evening.

When we got back, Popo, Kow-fu and Kow-mo were already there waiting for us. Even though it was Papa’s birthday celebrations, you were, as usual, the centre of attraction as everyone wanted to play with you! :D

All of us were so tired and sleepy, Little One, including you! It was amazing how tired we all were. Thus, after the cake-cutting, Mama’s family left for home and we quickly put you to bed.

We love you!

Skyler Can Say ‘Kick”

Dearest Little One,

You can say ‘kick’! :D You have been kicking a ball around the house these past few weeks and Mama heard you say ‘kick’ this morning. :D

Kow-mo and Kow-fu came down to visit. You still love Kow-mo lots, Darling. :D You have so much fun with her. :D You spent quite a bit of time with Kow-mo putting up magnets on the fridge door today. You seemed to be enjoying yourself tremendously! :D

After that, Mama and you came down to meet Papa and we sent Mama to school. You were so sleepy by then that you slept on the MRT train on the way to meeting Papa and you fell asleep in your car seat immediately after we placed you in it. And you slept all the way to Mama’s school and back home! You must have been so sleepy, Little One.

We love you!

Papa’s Birthday with Grandma

Dearest Baby Girl,

We celebrated Papa’s birthday with Grandma today – sort of. :D

We went for church service this morning and brought Grandma along. We made a concerted effort to be on time today but still were a few minutes late. Well, it may be better next week when our service begins at 10.30 am. :D

You went for your Sunday School with Mama and we are so thankful for your Sunday School teachers; they are so committed and so good with you and the other toddlers / young kids! Oh! Aunty Angeline (che-che Alyssa’s Mama, one of your Sunday School teachers) gave birth to mei-mei Victoria on 20th March 2007. The date is the same as kor-kor Kenji’s! :D

Reverend Ng’s sermon touched on how having salvation does not only mean being saved by Jesus Christ and being assured of going to heaven; it also means that we are able to mend the image of God in us (we are made in God’s image) that has been marred by sin.

After the service, we all trooped down to the nearby Japanese restaurant for Papa’s birthday lunch. We had a good lunch but you were so sleepy that Papa had to carry you to help you fall asleep. Then you refused to sleep in your stroller and Papa had to carry you all the time you were asleep. Everytime Papa tried to put you in your stroller, you would cry and fuss and disturb everyone in the restaurant! :P All the waitresses were quite nice to you. They kept on giving you marshmallow candy and they kept on coming to play with you. :D Papa could only eat after you gave up trying to sleep! :D

After we brought Grandma home, we went off to Vivocity as we had not been there for some time and we wanted to spend some time together as a family. You were so cute! We passed by a Mini Toon shop and you kept on indicating that you wanted to go in. We brought you in and you were so happy! Both of us wondered what you thought the shop was. :D We shopped a bit before heading home.

We love you, Little One!

Grandma Stays Over

Dearest Sweetheart!

We asked Grandma to stay over from Thursday as Tua-pek and his family have gone over to Cambodia and Grandma would be fairly lonely in Tampines without your che-che and kor-kors to keep her company. We also needed her help in watching over you while we worked.

On Thursday night, we all went over to the Point to have dinner and shop a bit for stuff for Grandma to use – a standing fan and an antenna for the TV. We had already moved some furniture into your room for Grandma to use.

After we got back, we set up everything for her but the TV antenna simply didn’t work well. We can’t figure out whether it was the TV or the antenna – probably both.

On Friday, Mama brought you over to Papa’s office for a visit in the late afternoon. After Papa completed his work, we all went back home to spend time with each other and Grandma. You were so tired today that you went to bed relatively early, Darling.

Saturday morning, Grandma and Papa brought you with us to a bank and we spent about an hour or so there. We returned home once we were done then Papa and Mama had to go off to work leaving you with Grandma.

Wow! This is the first time Grandma spent so much time with you and us.

We will be going to church together with Grandma tomorrow before she goes back to her own place. Thank you, Grandma, for helping out with us! :D

We love you, Baby Gal!

Mama’s Birthday!

Darling Skyler,

Today is Mama’s birthday!

The sad thing was that Papa was away from you both the whole day! Papa had to go to work as usual and to make matters worse, Papa had to attend class in the evening as well. Sigh…

Mama and you spent the whole day together and the greater part of the night as well. It was not until later in the evening that Godma Audrey came over to our place to celebrate Mama’s birthday with her.

Godma Audrey had brought dinner for Mama and herself and a birthday cake. You all sang Mama the birthday song after which they had a slice of cake.

Papa ended class fairly late and then had to rush back to collect Mama’s birthday cake that we had ordered the day before before the shop closed. Papa just made it in time! :D We then sang Mama the birthday song once again and had another cake-cutting ceremony. :D
You had also bought Mama a tin of Kjeldsen's Butter Cookies! :D It was so amazing. We had brought you along to a supermarket a few days before and you suddently just reached out and picked up a tin of Kjeldsen's - Mama's favourite brand of butter cookies! Wow an insightful birthday present for Mama! :D

Happy Birthday, Mama! You’re the best Mama Baby Skyler and wife to Papa that this family can ever dream of! WE LOVE YOU!

By this time, you were so exhausted that you fell asleep almost immediately, Poor Baby Girl. Papa saw you for only about an hour today. Papa’s so sad. Papa missed you. Sigh…

OH! Today was also the first day that Mama gave you a shower instead of a bath! :D

We love you, Little One!

Mama’s Birthday Celebration!

Dearest Little Skyler,

We celebrated Mama’s birthday with Popo, Kow-fu and Kow-mo today.

Popo had come down early today to spend time with you as Mama is very busy with her work. However, you were so fussy that Mama could not do any work at all! Mama and Popo then took you to the library so that you could get a few books. After returning, Popo brought you to the open spaces with your tricycle and spent quite a bit of time there.

Mama then met Papa at the food court to buy dinner for all of us after you and Popo had returned. When we got back, Kow-fu and Kow-mo had already arrived and we found you sleeping on Popo! That was so sweet!

We then had dinner after you had woken up and had the traditional cake cutting before Mama’s family left.

Kow-fu and Kow-mo gave us a new kettle. Our current kettle is almost 8 years old! It’s quite amazing actually that it’s lasted this long. Usually kettles don’t last so long, I think. And it’s actually still working but we thought that for hygiene sake, we should have a new one. :D

You were so tired after everyone had left that you went to bed almost immediately.

We love you, Little One!

Back to the Polyclinic

Dearest Little Skyler,

We had to bring you for a follow up blood test today, Little One. It was ordered by the doctor at the hospital to ensure that your blood count was normal and that the reading that day at the hospital was due to your viral fever.

Papa rushed back from work so that we could get to the Polyclinic slightly earlier. Papa had learnt a lesson from last year when we had to bring you there for your jaundice checks. The clinic closed very early and the laboratory that did the blood test for some reason stopped accepting registrations one hour before the polyclinic itself closed. Thus, last year, we had to get you to the lab by 3.30 pm or they would not conduct the test for you!

When we got there, all the memories of last year came flooding back – the slowness of every step in the long drawn out process of seeing a doctor in a polyclinic. We took a long time to register as there were so many people waiting their turn. We had to wait for forty people to register before we could do so. After that we had to wait for some time before the doctor was ready to see us. It was only after the doctor had seen us that we could bring you to the lab for your blood test.

At the laboratory, it was yet another frustration. Mama tried to put your forms into a tray and she got reprimanded for putting your blood test request form in the X-Ray tray. So Mama asked what we were supposed to do and the lady said that we were to wait for our turn to be called. After waiting for a long time, Papa went into the blood testing room to ask what the procedure was and another lady said that we were supposed to wait for our number to flash on the screen before we could register. Thus, we waited some more. The number on the screen did not change at all for the longest time so Mama once again asked the lady behind the counter what the procedure was and she said that we were supposed to wait for our number to flash but since you were a baby, they would process us first! This was so frustrating for us – you were a baby since you got there! They simply did not bother to check and just made us wait for nothing!

Anyway, you finally had your blood test done and the results showed that your blood count had returned to the normal range! Yay! The virus is finally gone! And there’s nothing wrong with your blood except that the signs of your having thalassaemia minor are still there. We will probably have to bring you back to KKH to confirm this, Little One. In the meantime, we thank God that you’re well again.

We love you, Little One!

Skyler Says No!

Dearest Little Skyler,

You have learnt how to say ‘No!’ It’s so cute when you do it but sometimes it can get frustrating, Little One. :D

You have been saying no for the past week or so and the way you do it is so cute! You will shake your head side to side and say something that totally sounds like ‘No!’ Even the nurse at KKH heard you say it and she was so amused by the way you said it.

The problem for Papa is that Papa is not sure when you really mean no and when you are just practicing. So, the only way to know for sure is to still try to get you to do what we want you to do until you really refuse.

We just love the fact that you are so able to communicate with us already.

We love you!

Farewell to Tuapek’s Family & An SSO Concert

Dearest Little Skyler,

We sent off Tuapek and his family today, Little One.

We had rested the whole morning as you were still recovering from your bout with fever and rash. As your rash seemed to be subsiding we then decided that we simply had to see off Tuapek and his family as we would not be seeing them for some months after they leave today for their posting to Cambodia.

Thus, we quickly bathed, changed and fed you and rushed off to their place hoping to catch them before they made their way to the airport. We made it just in time as they were already moving their luggage out the door. The taxi that they had booked was already waiting for them downstairs. We helped them to move their many pieces of super heavy luggage into the lift and then we set off for the airport.

At the airport, you had a few photographs taken with your che-che and kor-kors and then we took one big family photograph before they went into the restricted area. Kor-Kor Kenji kept on coming up to the glass barrier to wave good bye to us. He was so cute! Then they walked off and were gone.

We then went for Mama’s birthday lunch with Grandma. You were so active that you simply refused to sit still in your chair. We once again had to take turns to eat so that one of us could watch over you. You were so cute that one of the staff gave you a cute, little, red-coloured, fish-shaped pencil case! :D

Later, on our way home, we stopped over at the Point as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra was having a performance entitled “SSO@Woodlands - Russian Spectacular” at the open space next to it. It was part of their efforts to reach out to the masses and Mama was quite excited about bringing you to experience this as we do not have many such opportunities as most performances will not allow little ones like you in as they fear that you will make too much noise.

We managed to get seats for ourselves and we waited for the performance to begin. We were so impressed with you, Darling. You managed to sit through four of their pieces without fussing at all! We had thought that we would have to leave soon after they started because you would be bored but you just sat there and listened for almost forty minutes! You completely surprised us! We are so proud of you! We then left before the last piece as Papa felt that we were stretching your patience a bit too much. :D

Part of the performance had a violin solo performed by a very accomplished young violinist named Selina Tang. She is only thirteen years old but she has won many prizes for her ability in playing both the violin and the piano. Her Papa and Mama must be so proud of her.

We also hope that you will develop an interest in playing music, Little One. Of course we don’t expect you to do what Che-Che Selina is doing but we do hope that you will learn how to play some instrument and be interested in developing your ability in it for as long as you can. :D

We love you, Little One.

Trip to Suntec City

Dearest Little Skyler,

We brought you down to Suntec City today as we needed to pick up a few necessities.

Papa and Mama had to have lunch once we got there as we had not had the lunch time meal at all these past few days due to your illness. This was thus a luxury that made Papa feel good again. :P Mama and Papa had to take turns to eat as you were quite fussy and refused to sit still so one of us had to take you out for walks while the other ate.

After our lunch, we brought you over to the Happy Kidz section. There we bought you a dress. The shop assistant che-che was very nice. She kept on saying that you were so well-behaved and so cute. She kept on playing with you while we there. She was so impressed with how well behaved you were. I think you enjoyed her attention too because you kept on playing with her as well.

We then brought you out to buy you a pair of shoes as your feet are growing too big for the current pair. We went over to the Levi’s cum Osh-Kosh B’gosh Shop. The shop assistant che-che there was not as friendly or nice as the previous one even though you waved at her and tried to play with her. But as we had to buy you a pair of shoes and the ones they had were quite nice, we went ahead anyway.

After that, we went to Carrefour to buy some necessities; we got jar food and diapers for you.

On our way home, we dropped by Aunty Patsy’s and Uncle Han Chong’s to pick up some toys and a stroller that they had for you.

We love you, Darling Girl.

Skyler Has High Fever (continued)

Dearest Little Skyler,

You continued to have a high fever on Thursday, 15th March 2007, Little One. You were okay for a while in the morning and we thought you would be fine already but in the afternoon, after a short nap, your temperature shot up to 39+°C again. Thus, we had no choice but to bring you to see the doctor again. Balloon Uncle was not around then, his partner, Dr Chong was in attendance.

Dr C did the usual checks on your temperature and checked your breathing before he came to the same conclusion as Balloon Uncle, that you probably had a viral fever. The only thing we could do was to bring your temperature down and allow the fever to run its course. He supervised Mama in inserting a suppository into you and issued us two more to use in case your temperature went up again.

We went out for a while (see blog for 15th March 2007) before we brought you home again for the night.

You were totally well from the time we inserted the suppository until Friday 2 am you’re your temperature spiked once more. You cried so piteously that you woke Papa up who then woke Mama up so that we could insert another suppository as your temperature had shot up past 39°C again. After that, you were sleepy once more so you went back to bed and so did we.

You were quite ok for the rest of the morning so we took you out (see blog for 16th March 2007). You were still okay when we came back and put you to bed as you were quite tired. However, after your nap, your temperature spiked yet again so we went to see Balloon Uncle.

Balloon Uncle was slightly worried about your fever by then. Though he was quite sure that it was a viral fever, he suggested that we take you to a hospital to make sure that it was not something else. He wrote a letter highlighting your situation and gave it to us to pass it the doctor at the hospital.

As we were not sure what the result would be, we prepared for a hospital stay over by packing extra clothing and such. Then we set off for KKH where you were born.

At KKH, the nurses inserted another suppository as your temperature was so high. They took some of your blood for a test. They had to do it twice because the blood from the first extraction had clotted before they could do anything. They also wanted to collect your urine but we totally failed as the urine bag that they supplied kept on coming loose. We waited a long time to see if we could collect some urine but to no avail.

Finally, the doctor called us in and her evaluation was that you had viral fever based on your blood test. The findings also indicated that you could possibly have thalassaemia minor. We would have to bring you for another blood test this coming Monday to test for this.

We then took you home to rest.

Your temperature remained normal for the rest of the night and even into Saturday morning. However, you had developed a rash the night before and the rash got worse by morning. The main thing for us was that your temperature remained normal and we rejoiced and thanked God for that! Fever is never a good thing over a long period is it can cause so much damage to the head, Little One, especially for someone your age.

You were still quite sleepy and you went back to bed quite often the whole morning.

We decided to not go for our church’s young families and young adults gathering at the Botanic Gardens in the evening as you still had your rash and we were afraid that you might pass it to the other children. We also did not go for Tua-Pek’s families farewell dinner (they are leaving for their Cambodia stint tomorrow) as we did not want any complications arising from your passing on the virus to your che-che and kor-kors.

We found out from Aunty Patsy and Uncle Han Chong what your illness is called – Roseola Infantum. Your symptoms were exactly as they described the illness to be – high temperatures between 38.5°C and 41.5°C for 3 to 5 days before it drops to the normal temperature and a rash will appear that would last between hours and a few days. Mama and Papa came home and checked up on it and were totally comforted that in almost all cases, there were no complications arising from this viral fever. Thank God!!!

Now, we just have to wait for the rash to subside.

We love you, Darling.

Zoo with Aunty Rachel and Kor-Kor Isaac

Dearest Little Skyler,

Today, we went to the zoo with Aunty Rachel and Kor-Kor Isaac. We met them at the entrance to the zoo. We rented a Tiny Explorer wagon to put kor-kor Isaac and you in but after a while, you refused to remain in it and Papa and Mama had to carry you practically throughout our stay at the zoo. Papa ended up putting his bag on your seat. :P

We walked around the zoo and looked at the animals. We so love to bring you to the zoo now as you can actually look at the animals with some sort of cognition. After a while, we decided to stop outside the giraffe enclosure to have a snack of grapes, blue berries and yoghurt that Aunty Rachel supplied. It was so cute seeing you and kor-kor Isaac sitting in the wagon eating your food.

We then saw the zoo keepers feeding the giraffes and later on the jaguars as well. This allowed us to see the animals close up. We then walked on a bit more and we came to the Fragile Forest exhibit where you promptly fell asleep. You simply could not stay awake and Papa had to carry you throughout our walk there.

We went on a tour with a guide who pointed out to us most of the animals and creatures kept in that enclosure – we saw roaches, beetles, butterflies, sloths, mousedeers, bats, the biggest pigeon known to mankind, and many other creatures. We were so glad that we waited for the guide to bring us around or we would not have known half as much if we had walked around on our own. We ended the tour with a feeding of Archer fish – fish that could shoot water out of its mouth at bugs like crickets that are hanging on leaves above the water to knock them off into the water so that they can eat them.

After we left the Fragile Forest, we went over to the Children’s World Playland section. There kor-kor Isaac went to play in the water and Mama and Papa brought you to play with the swing. You managed to sit on the swing for a few oscillations before you looked worried so Mama and Papa took you off of it.

We then fed you some milk and a few grapes at the eating section there before we headed out as it looked like it was going to rain again. On our way out, we saw the elephant ride area and the horse drawn carriage came around a few times. We quickly hurried out as we were afraid of getting stuck there in the rain yet again.

We hope you enjoyed your third visit to the zoo this week, Little One. We’re Friends of the Zoo so we’ll end up there more often this year. :D

We love you, Sweetheart.

Chiro & Toys R Us

Dearest Little Skyler,

We brought you out to the Chiropractor as Mama had an appointment and we did not want to cancel as Mama needed treatment for her wrists so that she could be strong enough to carry you. You are getting very heavy, Little One, albeit very slowly. :D

While we were at the chiro clinic, you were happily walking around – sometimes dangerously trying to touch electrical outlets. Every time Papa tried to prevent you from doing something dangerous by pulling you away, you would cry and scream. :D This went on for the whole time that Mama was inside the treatment room - which was a very long time indeed! :D

After Mama had completed her treatment, we went over to United Square as we had to return a toy that we had bought from Toys R Us. Before that, we met up with our insurance agent who had informed us that our insurance company had come up with more competitive pricing for Mama’s and Papa’s insurance policies and we could convert to the lower priced one. So, that’s what we did.

While we were with him, you kept on waving at him but he seemed to ignore you and you got so frustrated that you started fussing! Poor Baby Girl! Anyway, Mama took you out to look around so that you would stop fussing and you walked into a store selling Disney products and you refused to come out! :D You were sitting on a sofa set so sweetly when Papa finally found you both.

We then tried to have dinner and we wanted to feed you some food but you refused to eat as you were still unwell.

We then went up to Toys R Us to return the toy and buy you another one. We ended up buying you a toy bear that can talk and interact with you to some extent.

After which, we went down to Cold Storage to look for your favourite raisins before we went home.

We love you, Darling.

Skyler Has High Fever

Dearest Little Skyler,

You had a very high fever today. Actually, you started having one since last night. As we still had the paracetamol from your previous visit to the doctor, we tried to feed that to you to bring your temperature down. You did not really want to take the milk in which we had put the medicine but you finally did finish it.

Throughout the night, you slept very fitfully and woke up every hour in total discomfort, poor baby girl. Sigh… Hearing you cry yourself awake was so heart-wrenching.

In the morning, you still had a fairly high fever and you kept on wanting to go to bed, we guess, due to the fever induced lethargy and tiredness. You also kept on refusing to eat anything substantial and this worried us a bit – however, we also knew that a fever would make one less inclined to eating so we were not too worried about that part of it.

Mama kept on trying to cool you down by toweling you down with cool water. Papa also kept on bathing you in an effort to bring your temperature down.

As we failed to bring your temperature down, we decided to bring you to see the doctor to see what he could do. Having such a high temperature was not good at all. People have gone deaf and suffered other complications because of fever.

We took you to your usual balloon uncle and your temperature was read at 39.7°C! He recommended that he administer a suppository to bring your temperature down quickly. Mama is quite versed with medication so she was sure that this was a good idea. He placed it in and you were crying throughout the process as it was obviously quite uncomfortable. He also gave us some medicine that you were to consume if your temperature remained above 38.5°C. The cute thing was that even though you cried throughout the process, you waved goodbye to him when we left the consultation room. :D

After we brought you out of the clinic, Papa smelt that you had boomed! Mama was quite worried that you had pushed the suppository out as well. Anyway, we think that was what happened because your fever remained quite high the rest of the afternoon after having dropped a bit for a short while.

You took another nap and Papa went for his lesson. Mama took care of you for the evening. Popo, Kow-fu and Kow-mo all came to visit you when they heard that you were unwell.

You appeared to be quite okay for a while – you ate half of a jar of food, some raisins, bread… but when Mama fed you milk containing the paracetamol, you vomited it all out. Mama thinks it’s because you didn’t like the taste of the medicine. Mama got worried about how high your temperature was and called Papa to come home to take you to see the balloon uncle again. As it was already close to the end of Papa’s lesson, Papa left and rushed home.

The balloon uncle took your temperature again and this time it registered at 39.9°C! As he agreed that you may have pushed out the suppository, he administered another smaller dosage. Again, you cried throughout the process but you still happily waved goodbye to him when we left his consultation room. :D

We came home and spent some time with you before putting you to bed. Your temperature seemed to have dropped and you managed to sleep a while.

It’s been close to two hours since you went to bed. We pray that you will be able to get a good night’s sleep so that your body can heal itself, Little One.

We love you, Darling.

Ikea & the Zoo

Dearest Little Skyler,

We brought the car to replace the broken window today. Papa was supposed to have gone for a course but it was too dangerous to leave the window the way it was as bad people could just reach in and unlock the car and steal things. Besides, if it rained, the inside of the car would be soaked!

Papa brought it in to Bukit Merah to get the window replaced as this was the only place that had advertised this service in the Business Listings of the Telephone Directory that we had. We then went over to Ikea to wait for the car to be ready.

We had brunch. There we met a kor-kor who was very nice. You had dropped one of your toys and he dashed over to pick it up for you. We were so impressed that we got you to offer him a toy but he didn’t take it and his Papa said that it was unnecessary. Later on, there was another che-che named Haley to whom we gave the toy. Her Mama kept on telling her to thank us but she was so shy!

We then walked around the shop. We came across another che-che who was four months older than you. It was so amusing to us; she was moving chairs around. Her Mama kept on saying that she was strange but she looked totally like you as you like to move furniture around as well.

We then had lunch but you refused to eat. You’ve not been eating properly for a few days now. It is quite worrisome for us but there’s nothing we can do about it as you simply refuse to take more than a few spoonfuls of food. You will take a bit of several things but never finish anything substantial. We hope that you’ll continue to grow okay.

After the car was ready, we picked it up and we came home.

Having rested for a bit, we decided to bring you to the zoo for a short visit as they were going to close soon. Being a weekday, we could have a tram ride for free so that’s what we did as we’d never taken the tram ride at the zoo before.

What a disappointment. We could hardly see anything as the tram was speeding right along and you were too short to see most of the animals that we could see from the tram. Anyway, towards the end of the short tram ride, the sky looked threatening so we decided to get off and head for the exit which was some distance away from the tram route. We didn’t make it as the rain poured down very quickly after we got off.

We went into a shelter to wait the rain out. All the while, we were wondering what the zookeepers would do to help us leave the zoo as they were supposed to be closing by then. The answer? Nothing, it seemed. In the end, we walked out in the rain 30 minutes after closing time. Then we came home.

We love you, Little One.

East Coast Park & ‘The Car’ Episode

Dearest Little Skyler,

We had yet another long day today.

Papa had to go to school in the morning to attend a course then Papa had to rush home to take care of you as Mama had to go to school to do her work.

After Papa got back home, we quickly got ready and left for lunch. We ate the Chinese restaurant at the Point and you had some porridge and a bit of ‘pau’ skin. You wanted to look at the fish in the tanks so we brought you over to do that. You refused to sit in your high chair so we had to take turns to eat as usual so that one of us could bring you around to look at things.

We then set off to bring Mama to her school. After letting Mama off, we headed over to the East Coast Park. You had already fallen asleep almost immediately after we left the Point. On the way there, Papa was also very sleepy. Papa was SO sleepy that Papa couldn’t take it too much longer so Papa decided that he had to take a nap too or we would be in trouble if he continued driving.

We drove into a multi-storey car park in Marine Parade and Papa pushed his chairback down and … you stirred! Papa was so worried that you were going to wake up and start crying and Papa would then have to care for you! But, thankfully, you continued sleeping and Papa went out like a light!

Papa woke up soon after feeling much better and you were still asleep. As Papa was feeling okay, Papa drove us over to the beach. Being a weekday, the place was not so crowded thus it was quite easy to find a parking place for the car. After parking, Papa woke you up from your long sleep and brought you over to a newly opened Burger King to feed you your afternoon milk.

The place was quite huge and empty of people. There WERE a few groups of people around but there were very many empty tables as well. So, Papa fed you in relative peace and quiet. However, you were not so hungry and only finished half the cup.

Since you did not want to eat or drink anymore, we went for a walk along the beach. There were some people there but it was not overly crowded. There was lots of space for us to walk without bumping into anybody. You were so intrigued by the sand that when we sat down on a bench, you started bending over and playing with the sand. Initially, Papa was worried that you would get dirty but Papa decided to let you experience touching the sand as this was actually your first time playing with sand at the beach. The last time Papa brought you to this beach, you were asleep throughout the time we were there.

You then spent some time just grabbing some sand and letting it drop through your fingers. After some time, Papa decided to continue walking thus he cleaned your hands and we continued with our walk. We saw lots of people cycling, roller-blading, playing, swimming and even barbecuing (Papa was quite surprised that people had started barbecuing at that time – it was still so early in the evening). We then went over nearer to the water’s edge and we found some shells to pick up. Papa decided to take back only one shell (as it was fairly nicely formed) as a souvenir of our trip.

After getting back to our car, we drove off to Grandma’s. This was where things got bad for Papa. After we had parked in the carpark below Grandma’s block of flats, Papa wanted to get you out of the car. But before he could do that, Papa had to take out the stroller and load it with our stuff. (Actually, you have stopped using the stroller already for some time now but Papa needed something for you to sit on during dinner with Grandma and the coffeeshop’s high chairs were all very dirty.) However, when Papa left you to get the stroller out, you kept on crying! To distract you while Papa did all that, Papa left the car key pouch with you.

Everything was going well … Papa had the stroller out and had put all the stuff that we needed in it. Then, Papa shut the front passenger door and reached for the handle of your door. Just as Papa was pulling on the handle, the car alarm beeped, the doors all locked and there we were … Papa locked out of the car and you locked in it! You had pressed on the alarm activation button! To make matters worse, you dropped the whole key pouch by the side of your baby seat and you were still strapped in it! There was absolutely no way you could reach for the key pouch and undo what had happened! Papa almost totally freaked out!

All the doors including the one for the boot had locked and there was no way Papa could unlock any of the doors! (Even though Papa was conscious of that, Papa still tried every single door anyway thinking that maybe, just this once, the remote locking system had failed – no such luck!) Then Papa remembered that his Papa had had a car where if the door was partially open when the door was locked, all one had to do was push the door closed all the way and the door would unlock. As your door was in this position, Papa tried it but of course the people who designed the car security had known of this and designed it to remain locked! As Papa no choice, Papa immediately called the Emergency Phone number – 999 – to summon help!

Thank God the Grandma’s block number and street name were printed clearly on the sign attached to the block and was visible from where we were as Papa couldn’t remember the address at all at that moment. Papa managed to give the person who answered his call the necessary information and then Papa could only wait for them to come and help free you.

Those were the longest five minutes of my life, Little One. I have been totally stressed out by several things in my life and each second that passed in those incidents were excruciating but none can match how I felt during this whole episode.

You were crying so piteously in the car and Papa was totally helpless! Papa had always promised to care for you and never let anything untoward happen to you but here he was unable to do anything! It was a terrible, terrible time!

All the while while waiting for the police to arrive, Papa was wondering what was taking them so long! (Strangely, all it actually took them was five minutes to arrive – which, on a normal day, would not have been long at all.) The first people to arrive were paramedics in an ambulance. Ironically, Papa didn’t think that they had come to help us as Papa had no idea why an ambulance would be sent. Funnily, Papa thought that someone had summoned an ambulance to help one of the elderly in the building as the building was built for the aged. Then Papa heard one of the paramedics in the ambulance say that he must be the one who called for them as there was nobody else around. A fire engine filled with firemen hot on their heels and they poured out of their vehicle and started moving around the car to assess the situation.

Papa must have watched too many TV shows and thought that all these people had to do was simply ‘break’ into the car like a car thief and unlock the door to save you. Apparently, that only happened in TV shows. The firemen said that the only way to save you was to smash a window so that they could reach in and unlock the door. They chose the smallest window that was the furthest away from you so that it wouldn’t cost as much to replace the window and also so that the glass would not fly onto you and hurt you. To do that, they kept on asking me for permission. Because they kept on asking me for permission, Papa got a bit confused and also asked them if there was any other choice. (The only other option was to get Mama to bring the spare key down but that would have taken way too long thus it was not really an option at all!) As there was no other choice, Papa kept on telling them to break it and get it over with. The strange thing was that there were three of these firemen and every one of them asked for permission to break the window. Papa kept on telling them to go ahead until, finally, they did.

The fireman who broke the window stuck half his body in so that he could reach in to unlock the door. It was quite dangerous for him as the glass was still on the window frame and he could have cut himself. Thank God nothing happened to him.

The paramedics pulled you out of your seat and passed you to me. That moment really felt like when the doctor passed you to me when you were born! My goodness, the relief I felt when I saw that you seemed totally okay!

The paramedics then wanted to conduct some tests on you to see if you were okay. You refused to let them touch you as they were strangers and you also did not like them putting on some device on your fingers or toes. Then, a paramedic examined you with his stethoscope and you started bawling. Apparently, your crying assured them that you were totally fine and none the worse for wear and they left us soon after. Papa totally understood that they were trying to ensure that you needn’t be brought to a hospital for further checks as many babies have been trapped in cars for long periods of time under a hot sun and they have become dehydrated and traumatised. As they had responded so quickly, you were actually still okay when they freed you. Thank God!!!
The firemen and policemen (oh yes, the police had arrived by then) asked Papa how this situation occurred and Papa in total embarrassment told them. The most humiliating thing was that the fireman asked Papa for his educational level. Hahahahaha! Oh well… After getting Papa’s personal particulars, everyone left us.

It was quite anticlimactic for Papa. Papa had thought that he would have had to sign a statement of some sort or something for having disturbed so many people. But, no, everyone just left us alone. It was quite a strange feeling after having caused so much commotion.

Papa was so traumatised by the close call that he had to call Mama even though she was in class. Papa just had to tell someone. Mama didn’t get the call the first time but she called back and Papa told her what had happened while we sat on a bench downstairs. Actually, Papa was the one who sat down; you were just wandering around looking at the people and the signs that were at your eye level. It was so amazing; you seemed totally unaffected by the whole incident!

After speaking with Mama, we went to Grandma’s place and then came back down to have dinner with her. Papa asked to eat at the coffeeshop next to the car park as we had a big hole in the car where people could reach in and steal something. :P But Papa didn’t mention anything to Grandma about this was it was quite embarrassing.

After dinner, we dropped off kor-kor Kenji’s replacement gifts of Star Wars figurines and then we went to pick Mama up. After we had stopped by Civic Centre to pick up some groceries we came home.

What an eventful day, Little One. Papa will never forget his silliness and also, Papa will never ever let you play with the car key again. :P

We love you, Little One.

Kor-Kor Kenji’s 4th Birthday

Dearest Little Skyler,

We had such a long day today.

We all went to church in the morning as usual. It was Family Sunday so there was no Sunday School. We watched a presentation by one of the church members who is a member of the United Nations and who had gone over to Timor Leste for some work. He was sharing with us about how poor the people there are and the amount of violence that is rampant in the streets due to what I think is the people’s poverty and joblessness. This reminds me to be thankful that we stay in Singapore where we have both peace and stability and jobs relatively aplenty.

After church, we drove over to Tua-Pek’s home to celebrate Kor-Kor Kenji’s 4th birthday! It was to be a birthday lunch and we were the first to arrive. The other guests included Grandma, Tua-Pek’s neighbour and Kor-Kor’s babysitter and her daughters.

We gave Kor-Kor his present of a radio controlled car and he was so thrilled with it. It was fairly responsive so we hope that he will learn quickly how to control it and not hurt anybody by ramming it into their feet.

Soon, everyone had arrived and we had lunch. There was so much food – we had pizza, Japanese handrolls that Tua-Erm prepared, chicken wings, curry chicken, salad, etc. There was also so much food leftover.

After a while, you were so sleepy that Mama and Papa wanted to leave but they encouraged us to stay for the cake-cutting. Tua-Pek suggested that you napped in his room so that was what we tried to do. It was a failure because you were not used to the room and kept on waking up when we placed you on the bed. Papa ended up having to carry you while you napped. After a while, Papa was so tired that he left you on the bed to be entertained by Mama while HE NAPPED! :D

Soon after, Tua-Pek came to call us for the cake cutting and after we had some cake, we left.

We went over to the Ikea Tampines as we thought that we might need to purchase a bed and wardrobe for Grandma as we had invited her to stay over with us sometime while Tua-Pek’s family was over in Cambodia. You were so tired that you slept in the stroller for one whole hour. Papa and Mama just walked around and looked at the furniture while you slept. Anyway, we could not decide whether to buy any furniture as we could not decide what to do with any furniture that we bought once the room became yours. :P We are probably going to get something temporary or makeshift for Grandma as she declared that she would not be staying so often anyway.
We also finally had the opportunity to have dinner there. It was interesting as it was always so crowded. However, as you were quite fussy, we ended up sharing only one portion of food – but you had so many varieties of food – your Orchard Plum, bread, Baby Bites, salmon, broccoli and pototatoes.

We had also bought plasters this morning to protect the wound on your thumb but they kept on falling off when you got them soaking wet with your saliva. Hmmm… we need to think of some other way to protect your wound.

We love you, Little One.

Friends of the Zoo & Gathering at Aunty Christina’s

Dearest Little Skyler,

We went to the zoo today and signed up for the Family membership of the Friends of the Zoo. This would allow us to visit the zoo as many times as we want without having to pay again. Actually, the membership was more for Papa and Mama as you enter for free until you’re three years old. But with this membership and our proximity to the zoo, we felt that we would benefit from it as we will probably bring you to the zoo very often this year since you are so much more aware of your surroundings now.

After getting our membership card, we went in to take a look around at the animals near the entrance to the zoo; we saw macaws, otters, a binturong and ghorals. We couldn’t go very into the zoo as we had to rush off to run some chores. Thus, after a quick walk about, we left.

Later, we went to the Toys ‘R’ Us at United Square to buy presents for kor-kor Kenji’s birthday tomorrow and some games for Tuapek’s family to entertain them while they were in Cambodia.

Then we went over to Aunty Christina’s for dinner where we met Godma Audrey, Uncle Henry, Aunty Christina and Uncle Wei Lii with che-ches Debbie and Faith and Aunty Karen and Uncle Heng Yew with che-ches Vera and Shannah.

Aunty Christina blended you some pasta with sauce and grapes. You had a few spoonfuls of that before you didn’t want anymore. We spent the whole evening there and you played with some of the toys and kept on climbing up the few steps of the stairs there! It was so tiring helping you up and down those few steps, Little One! :D

After we had come home, we tried to stop you from biting your thumb but you were so distressed that we gave up. You were crying so piteously! We hope that your thumb will heal soon, Darling.

We love you SO much!

Gathering at Aunty Doo Guat’s

Dearest Little Skyler,

We went to Aunty Doo Guat’s for a gathering. Kor-kors Matthew and Zachary were there as well as Aunty Patsy and Uncle Han Chong with che-che Nicole and kor-kor Ethan.

After we got there, you spent quite a bit of time playing with a kitchen set that Aunty Doo Guat had. You then had some beehoon as you didn’t eat very much of the porridge that Aunty Doo Guat had prepared for you.

The other children were quite active in playing with their toys and with each other but as you were still quite young (and small) we did not let you play with them then. You wait until you are more stable on your feet, okay?

Later in the evening, all the adults started playing with puzzles that stopped all conversation. Mama was so good with them!

Darling Little Skyler, we love you so much!

Visit to Godpa and Godma

Dearest Little Skyler,

As we had to make time for Mama to study, we went to pay a visit to Godpa and Godma. We had not seen them since your baptism last year, Little One.

We got there a bit late as Papa had lots of work to clear in the office and thus came back later than I had intended. We were later still as we had to feed you your dinner then bathe you. When we finally arrived at Godpa’s and Godma’s it was quite late in the evening already.

Godpa gave us a copy of his book that Papa had been showing to you at the bookstores. Godpa wrote his book because he felt a great need to guide people who provide services on how to treat their customers. The service industry in Singapore needs all the help it can get, Little One. It’s amazing to Papa that some places hire people to work in children’s stores when these people are very obviously not interested in children at all. We’ve encountered quite a number of such stores where they were totally unhappy that we brought you to shop there even though you were not doing anything very much at all. However, there are also many stores where the people who work there are a joy to behold as they really know how to make you feel welcome and thus encourage your Mama and Papa to want to buy something from them just because of that! :D

Papa spent time catching up with Godpa while Godma took care of you. You played with a ball with God-kor kor Joshua. While Papa was with Godpa, Godma trimmed your nails, Little One! Papa was so pleasantly surprised! Papa had been intending to trim your nails but simply did not have time. Thus, it was a very welcome act that Godma performed. Mama said that your nails had never been so nicely trimmed in your life. :P Papa doesn’t trim your nails properly, Little Girl. :P

Godpa and Godma gave you the presents they had prepared for an intended previous visit and your birthday party. They didn’t give them to you before as we just couldn’t meet up.

And before we left, Godpa showed you his ‘koochee’ finger! You were so amused that you couldn’t stop laughing which totally encouraged Godpa to carry on. :D You sure had fun there, Skyler!

We love you!

Popo’s Visit

Dearest Little Skyler,

Popo came to spend most of the day with Baby Skyler today.

Papa restarted his studies today so Papa was too busy to come back in the afternoon to spend time with Mama and you. Papa felt very bad about leaving you all alone for so long and Papa wishes that he had the time to come back to spend with you both!

To give Mama some downtime, we invited Popo to come spend time with Skyler; Popo then brought her downstairs to play with her tricycle. You all spent lots of good times together downstairs!

Gong-gong had gone back to Hongkong already and this has made us sad as we will miss him. And so will you as you always enjoyed being with him. Sigh… It’s terrible that family are overseas and they cannot be around to experience familial love. We’ll try to avoid it but we’ll see how it goes.

We love you, Little One

Skyler’s Long Walk

Dearest Little Skyler,

You took a long walk with Papa this evening to give Mama time to do her work and study.

Papa decided to try something new thus we walked through the estates heading in the direction of Sembawang. We went through the estates next to ours and we saw a family of statues before ending up at the coffeeshop near Seagate - the one that Uncle Thomas said had fairly good food.

We then continued walking. Actually, for a long while already, Papa had been carrying you as you did not want to walk. Just as we arrived at the traffic junction that connected us to Sembawang, you fell asleep! Our walk ended up with Papa taking a long walk home carrying a sleeping you! All in all, we spent about one and a half hours on our walk. :D

However, you became totally awake once we got into the lift - stayed awake for a long time after that. It took a very long while before Papa managed to put you to bed that night. :D

We love you, Little Girl

Skyler’s Busy Weekend

Dearest Little Skyler,

This weekend was a very busy for us, Little Girl.

On Saturday, we went for Aunty Sandy’s wedding lunch at Peony Jade Restaurant at Clarke Quay. We had never been at that restaurant before so we were a bit lost but thankfully we managed to get directions from Papa’s friends. We met up with Papa’s former colleagues - Uncle Boon Cheng, Aunties Pat, B.K. and Kar Foon. You remember Uncle Boon Cheng, right? We went to his place to play with kor-kor Joel and che-che Grace before? He’s the one who introduced you to Teddy Puffs. :D

You allowed almost everyone to carry you and everyone was so impressed with how well-behaved you were! :D You also did your usual activity which was walking around all over the place exploring. :D You definitely kept Papa and Mama busy. :D

That night, we had dinner with Tua Pek who had just come back from Cambodia. You spent the evening playing with che-che Reika and kor-kors Eujin and Kenji. It was a fun time for you as they love to play with you. :D Sigh… Very few opportunities left to see them, Little One. They’re leaving for their overseas posting soon. :(

On Sunday morning, we went for church. You attended the Sunday School and ate FIVE biscuits during the snack time! You really love eating bread and biscuits, don’t you, Skyler? :D We’re still hoping that you’ll enjoy eating more substantial food soon. During Sunday School, you did some drawing too! :D

For dinner, we went for Mama’s cousin’s wedding at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. It was Mama’s long-lost, never-seen before, cousin’s wedding. :D Mama was so curious about how he looked! :D There, we met Gong-gong, Popo, Kow-fu and Kow-mo and other of Mama’s relatives. It was quite fun meeting them as we very seldom meet up with them. We also missed seeing them during Chinese New Year because we were all unwell.

Once again, you were so well-behaved that people commented on it. :D What a good girl you are! But, as usual, you could not sit still throughout the dinner (which is alright) so all of us took turns to bring you outside for walkies. :D By doing this, you were able to last the whole dinner! We were even among the last to leave. Well done, Little One! Your endurance has become much better! :D

We love you SO much!
